County's second H1N1 death confirmed

GOSHEN, Ind — There has been a second confirmed death from the H1N1 virus in Elkhart County.

Elkhart County Health Department officials reported the death from H1N1 flu-related complications Monday, but gave no other details, citing confidentiality reasons.

“I’d like to express my condolences to the patient’s family and friends during this difficult time,” said Elkhart County Health Officer Daniel Nafziger. “The overwhelming majority of people who get infected with 2009 H1N1 influenza do recover, but this is a sad reminder that the virus can cause death.”

Nafziger said he could not elaborate further on either the age of the victim nor the location of the death. He did say that the health department is working hard to get the available H1N1 vaccine distributed and used as quickly as it can. However, the department has not received enough vaccine to even vaccinate all the priority groups.

At the beginning of the month students at Northridge High School and Goshen Middle School received H1N1 inoculations by the health Department. More than 700 GMS students received the vaccine on Nov. 3.

The first death due to complications of the H1N1 virus in Elkhart County was reported on July 31.

Nafziger went on to remind residents to help prevent the spread of influenza by cleaning their hands thoroughly and frequently, covering their coughs and sneezes and staying home if they’re sick.

“I’d like to express my appreciation for the patience and cooperation of Elkhart County residents given the limited vaccine supply,” Nafziger said. “It has been the rare person who has complained or become angry that they aren’t in a priority group as defined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Obviously we would prefer to have enough vaccine to give it to everyone who wants it.”
