GOSHEN —
GOSHEN — The Mastersons will be in concert Saturday at Ignition Garage, 120 E. Washington St., Goshen. Showtime is 7:30 p.m.
The musical duo is visiting Goshen in support of its debut album, “Birds Fly South.”
“This is a noteworthy release from New West Records,” Jason Samuel, general manager of 91.1 The Globe, said of “Birds Fly South.” “(The Mastersons) have been members of Steve Earle’s band ‘The Dukes’ for a number of years, and were featured in his recent show in Nashville. Husband and wife, Chris Masterson and Eleanor Whitmore have already proven their ability to play with the greats. This album proves they can also write and command a stage on their own.”
According to the duo’s website, Whitmore and Masterson apprenticed for years with other musicians, she with Regina Spektor, Susan Gibson, Kelly Willis, Diana Ross, Will Hoge and others, he with performers including Jack Ingram, Son Volt and Bobby Bare Jr. The two met in 2005 and each debuted with solo albums — Whitmore’s was 2008’s “Airplanes” and his was an EP called “The Late Great Chris Masterson.” They opted to write and sing together.
“It all started coming together organically,” Whitmore said on the website. “And the songs started to sound like a band, not like a song swap.”
The Mastersons’ upcoming gig is part of a concert schedule at Ignition Garage that, according to venue owner Steve Martin, is getting great response from the community as well as drawing fans from Chicago, Ann Arbor and Fort Wayne.
“Many of these artists have fans that are looking for their tour stops in the Midwest,” Martin said. “Those who have attended shows here are very complimentary of the room, the sound and the intimate atmosphere.”
Tickets for the Saturday concert are available at Better World Books, next door to Ignition Music, in downtown Goshen. Reserve seats by calling 574-534-1984 or purchase tickets online at www.ignitionmusic.net.
