GOSHEN —
Morgan Uceny, a 2003 Plymouth High School graduate, will be one of the top contenders for the Gold Medal in the women’s 1,500 meters today in the London Olympics.
The race is scheduled for 3:55 p.m.
The 26-year-old qualified for the finals by finishing third in her heat (4:05.34) on Wednesday. Asil Cakir Alptekin of Turkey won the heat in 4:05.11. Uceny established herself among the contenders on the opening lap and was leading the race at the 800 mark (2:15.32).
According to a USA Today article no American women has ever won an Olympic medal in the 1,500.
Uceny has a personal best time of 4:00.06 and was ranked No. 1 in the world in 2011 in the event.
While in high school Uceny competed at Foreman Field in Goshen as a member of the Plymouth track and field team in the Goshen Girls Relays. As a senior in 2003, she anchored a winning 4 x 800 relay team and finished second in long jump. The host Redskins edged Plymouth, 102-100, for the team title.
A couple of weeks later, she placed third in the 800 meters in the annual Northern Lakes Conference meet behind Tiffany Brenneman of Northridge and Julie Seiss of Warsaw. Brenneman finished in 2:14.92, breaking Uceny’s meet record of 2:17.92 from the previous year.
Uceny was the state champion in the 800 (2:13.04) as a junior.
She went on to run at Cornell University where she was a four-time All-American.
