Though stories often tell of a knight coming to a damsel’s rescue, this Lady came to her man’s rescue July 31.
Lady, a black Labrador owned by Charles Grise of Goshen, helped save her owner’s life, according to Grise’s niece, Joey Ogburn.
Grise was working in the rafters of his business, Alum-A-Craft in Elkhart, when he fell through and landed in a bathroom, hitting his head on a sink. He broke his nose and three vertebrae in his neck and knocked the sink from the wall, according to Ogburn.
When the sink came loose, water began coming from the pipes, Ogburn said. Grise was in cold water for anywhere from two to five hours, and he was found with a body temperature of around 80 degrees.
The only reason he’s not dead of hypothermia, according to Ogburn, is his loyal dog Lady.
“The dog got on top of him and kept him warm,” Ogburn said via a phone call from Arizona. “But you have to keep in mind that this dog hates water. She won’t go near it. For her to go through that and lay with him the whole time is amazing.”
Lady laid on top of Grise, keeping him as warm as possible, until he was found by his wife.
“They had to pull the dog off of him when the paramedics got there,” she said. “She didn’t want to leave him.”
Grise is recovering, and he is now in Chicago seeing specialty therapists, Ogburn said. He hasn’t gotten to see Lady since the accident, though he has asked for her frequently.
“He never goes anywhere without that dog,” Ogburn explained. “I’ll be flying out there at the end of the month and I will take her to Chicago myself to see him, if the hospital will allow it.”
Ogburn said she is looking into applying for a Dog of Valor Award for Lady. Dog of Valor Awards are a national recognition from the Humane Society of the United States, and Ogburn said she is will be filling out the application soon.
“My uncle is a great guy with a tough exterior,” she said. “He’s really like this big, huge teddy bear. He just loves that dog... She’s a hero. She saved his life.”
