Mahala Miller picked as Miss Apple Blossom

NAPPANEE — Nine young ladies vied for the title of Miss Apple Blossom and after being judged in several categories, Mahala Miller, Miss G&W Herbs, was crowned the 2012 queen.

Mahala is the daughter of Gerald and Wanda Miller and is a sophomore at Bethel College. Mahala won a $1,000 scholarship.

First runner up was Emily Hoffman, Miss Seifert Drugs. Emily is a senior at NorthWood High School and the daughter of Eric and Helen Hoffman. As first runner up, Emily won a $750 scholarship.

Second runner up was Darcy VanDiepenbos, Miss MAvTistic Glass and Stone. Darcy is a junior at Indiana University and the daughter of Jeff and Joy VanDiepenbos. As second runner up Darcy won a $500 scholarship.

Other contestants were: Morgan Kern, Jennifer Lehman, Lizzie Kern, Jenna Mikel, Cassie VanDiepenbos and Natalie Hostetler.

The girls were judged on four categories for a total of 200 points — the judge’s interview held prior to contest, biographical information, including grade point average and activities, stage presence and essay.

The role of the Miss Apple Blossom Queen is to be a bridge between the youth and the business community and she will represent Nappanee throughout Elkhart County.

The contestants were asked to write a 300-word essay about what the Apple Festival means to them. Mahala’s essay recalled the “anticipation and excitement I experienced as a child when the Apple Festival drew near.” She mentioned all the delicious food and “all the mouth-watering apple delicacies, the exciting activities, thrilling rides and shopping,” she said.

She called the Apple Festival “a vessel for laughter, fellowship and fun.”

After being crowned 2012 Miss Apple Blossom, Mahala said, “It means a lot to think he community, the judges chose me to play this role. I’m real excited to go out in the community and represent the Apple Festival for Nappanee.”
