Footwear, dysfunctional blended-family relations and a young woman’s search for happiness.
These elements factor into a classic tale, and the telling — complete with tunes — will be in the spotlight this weekend at Westview Junior-Senior High School.
The Westview music department production of “Cinderella” begins its three-day run Friday. Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets cost $7 and can be purchased by calling Westview at 260-768-4146.
The Westview crew will be performing the Rodgers and Hammerstein version of “Cinderella.” It was the songwriting team’s sole musical written for television, according to Westview music department staff, and was viewed by more than 100 million people in 1957. The production was later remade for TV twice and adapted for the stage. School staffers say the Westview show will retain the classic fairy tale aspect of “Cinderella.”
Westview pupils have been preparing for the upcoming shows with rehearsals since the beginning of September. Among them: “Cinderella” herself, Michelle Mowery.
“Pretty much the whole show, I’m in my own little world as Cinderella, so that’s pretty fun,” Mowery said Tuesday as cast and crew worked to fine-tune the show. “I guess the fun part for me is getting to wear the huge ball gown. And watching them.”
“Them” referred to Mowery’s nearby fellow cast members — Erika Byler, Jeanie Miller and Sarah Brugger — respectively Cinderella’s stepmother and stepsisters.
For her part, Byler indicated no problem “playing bad.”
“I probably like the fact that I’m made up to be this evil, witchy person,” Byler said in discussing what she likes about the role. “The make-up is amazing, and the costume really adds stuff to it. And then I can just act on top of it. It’s great.”
“I really like just being disgusting and being goofy onstage,” Miller added. “We can pretty much do a lot of things, like play around with our character. It’s really fun.”
Brugger said she enjoys the dynamic of playing off Miller’s character, theatrically the other half of her stepsisterly duo.
“Because it’s fun to be funny by yourself, but when you’re funny with someone else, it’s hilarious,” she said.
