UPDATE: Police say murder suspect killed himself

ALBION —

A Michigan man who was suspected of killing two senior citizens in northern Michigan and later found shot at Chain O’Lakes State Park has been identified.

Indiana Conservation officers and Noble County sheriff’s officers are investigating what they said appears to be a suicide of Louis E. Tantalo, 50, Johnnesburg, Mich.

According to conservation officer Rodney Clear, a female visitor notified park officials early Sunday afternoon about a man in a vehicle who might need assistance.

Tantalo was found in a lot near the Glacier Ridge Pavilion with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to conservation officers. He was flown to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, where he died shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday. He reportedly left a suicide note.

According to the Associated Press, authorities in northern Michigan identified Tantalo as a suspect in the deaths of Ronald V. Smith, 70 and Jean E. Carpenter, 82, who were found shot in the head Monday.

Smith is the father of Tantalo’s estranged wife, according to Montgomery County Sheriff’s officers. The two victims were discovered at Lewiston, 90 miles south of the tip of the Lower Peninsula. Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies were called to a home there about 3 p.m. Monday.
