Concerto competition winners announced

A Goshen musician won gold in the 27th annual Concerto Competition, sponsored by the Elkhart County Symphony, on Sunday. Cash and the opportunity to perform with the symphony as a feature soloist during a March 3 concert at the Lerner were the prizes.

Eight students from various high schools in the area competed.

The following were awarded the top three spots:

Gold awarded to Benjamin Wiebe — In addition to a $200 cash prize, Wiebe will perform “Concerto No. 1 , Opus 49” by Dmitri Kabalevsky with the symphony on March 3. Benjamin is the son of Brian and Brenda Wiebe and is a senior at Goshen High School. He is a member of the GHS Symphonic Orchestra and studies cello privately with Lara Turner.

Silver was awarded to Carol Weirich — She received a $100 cash award. Carol is the daughter of Kyle and Tracey Weirich and is a junior at Central High School. She performed the “Piano Concerto No. 3, Movement 1” by Dimitri Kabalevsky and is studying piano privately with Anna Bauer.

Bronze was awarded to Sean Weber — He received a $50 cash award. Sean is the son of Chris and Mary Weber and is a senior at Goshen High School, where he is a member of the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band. He performed the “Concerto for Trombone, Movement 1” by Launy Gröndahl on trombone  and is studying privately with Kenley Inglefield.

Other contestants included: Anton Gillespie, a junior at John Adams High School, French horn;  Alexis Barton, a junior at Goshen High School, violin; Sadie Gustafson-Zook, a senior at Bethany Christian, violin; Liam Maher, a junior at St. Joseph’s High School, violin; and Peter Paetkau, a senior at Goshen High School, violin.

The March 3 concert is titled “A Taste of the Tropics.” The concert will begin at 4 p.m. in the Lerner Theater.
