Westview Elementary sixth-grader wins school’s geography bee

EMMA — Westview Elementary School sixth-grader Markus Miller is champion of the school’s 2012-1013 National Geographic Bee.

Markus is the son of Neil and Jasmin Miller of Wolcottville and is in Bridgett LeWallen’s class. Markus will advance to the next level of the national competition by taking a written qualifier test. The state’s top 100 scorers will advance to the state level competition in March.

In December, fifth- and sixth-graders at Westview competed in the preliminary round. The written test consisted of 50 question son geography around the world. The top 10 scorers then advanced to the final competition round. Those qualifiers were: Kent Yoder, Elijah Hales, Michael Miller, Markus Miller, Logan Galbreath, Jack McCoy, Baiely Hostetler, Carter Giggy, Grace Miller and Derek Miller.

On Jan. 9, the final round took place and Markus won.

Elijah Hales, son of Ross and Candance Hales of Cromwell, was the school’s runner-up. Elijah is a sixth-grader in Travis Davis’ class.
