Dry conditions prompt emergency proclamation; burn ban in Elkhart County

A Disaster Emergency Proclamation, which inlcudes a burn ban, has been issued for Elkhart County and has been endorsed by Goshen city officials. Other nearby counties with the same ordinance in place this week are Noble and LaGrange.

According to the proclamation, effective as of 9 a.m. Friday, Elkhart County is at risk of widespread fire hazards because of the ongoing drought conditions, leading Elkhart County Commissioners to declare a state of emergency for the county.

Effective immediately, the following activities are prohibited in Elkhart County:

• Campfires and other recreational fires, unless enclosed;

• Open burning of any kind using conventional fuel such as wood or other combustible matter, with the exception of grills fueled by charcoal briquettes or propane (charcoal from permitted grills shall not be removed from the grills until the charcoal has been thoroughly extinguished; and

• The open burning of debris such as timber or vegetation, including such debris that result from building construction activities.

In addition, residents are strongly encouraged to refrain from using firework devices while the state of emergency is in effect.

Burning will be allowed in burn barrels only with a 1/4th-inch mesh top and only from dawn to dusk.

All residents of Elkhart County are being directed to comply with necessary emergency measures.

The Disaster Emergency Proclamation will remain in effect until 9 a.m. Friday, June 22, unless the decision is made to amend or terminate the proclamation at an earlier date.

The Elkhart County proclamation was endorsed by Goshen officials Friday, who also noted that fireworks in the Goshen city limits are not permitted at this time.  City ordinances allow commercial firework only between June 29 and July 9. (Items not limited to certain dates include sparklers, glow worms, snappers, etc.) For information on what is allowed, call city hall at 533-8621.
