Firefighters, police officers sworn in at city meeting Monday

GOSHEN — The Goshen Board of Public Works and Safety approved the hiring of one firefighter, two patrolmen and five reserve patrolmen, on probationary status, in the weekly session held Monday.

Fire Chief Dan Sink recommended the board hire Brian Wogoman as a probationary firefighter for the Goshen Fire Department, effective June 18. The board approved this recommendation, and Wogoman was sworn in by Mayor Allan Kauffman.

Police Chief Wade Branson recommended that the board hire Mark Clere and Joshua Farmer as probationary patrolmen for the Goshen Police Department. He also recommended the hiring of five reserve patrolmen, including Deshone Harris, Kris Hershberger, Kyle Kalb, Nicolas Kauffman and Damian Sherck. All were sworn in by Mayor Kauffman.

The mayor said he was proud of his son.

“He said he feels called to be a police officer,” he said. “(Swearing him in) was different — I was a little emotional.”

The mayor expressed some concern about hiring his son as a police officer, citing an upcoming Indiana nepotism law that prohibits the hiring of family in local government that goes into effect July 1.

“I wouldn’t want anyone to think he hasn’t gotten this on his own merit,” he said. “He has gotten this on his own. The police chief doesn’t have the same hang-ups that I do, and several other police officers said the same thing.”

Nicolas Kauffman’s position as a reserve patrolman doesn’t break this nepotism rule, however, because he won’t be receiving a salary. Reserve patrolmen receive a $500 clothing stipend every year, as well as payment for court duty if they must sit in court.

“If he wants to stay doing this until I’m no longer mayor, and then be sworn in as a police officer, that’s fine with me,” the mayor said.
