SYRACUSE —
Two candidates are competing for the open District 2 seat on the Wawasee School Corp. board of trustees. They are George Gilbert and Brandy Maney.
Candidate information follows:
George W. Gilbert
Address: 10635 N. Lung Lane, Syracuse
Education: BS and MS from Indiana University; EDS from Ball State University
Related experience: Teacher, principal, superintendent
Occupation: Retired
Why have you decided to run for election?
Education has been my career as a teacher, principal, curriculum director and eleven years as a superintendent. Being retired, I have the time to devote to the position. Wawasee is a good school corporation, but it can be better. I want to be a part of making it better.
What do you feel are some of the biggest issues or challenges currently facing the County Council?
Challenges to school districts include a lack of adequate state funding and meeting ever changing state mandates on student testing and teacher evaluations.
How would you work to address those issues if elected?
To address those issues we can make better use of teacher aides and supportive staff, seek funding from alternative sources and grants, and work through professional organizations to enlighten the legislature as to the needs of public education.
Brandy Maney
Address: 604 N. Huntington St., Syracuse
Age: 27
Education: High school diploma
Occupation: Owner of Brandy’s Baby Shop, Syracuse
Why have you decided to run for election?
I have seven kids in the school systems. I would like to help make the decisions that affect my children.
