Two candidates are competing for the open District 2 seat on the Concord Community Schools’ board of trustees. They are Tim Yoder and Jeremiah Matthews.

Tim A. Yoder

Age: 47
Education: 1983 Goshen High School; Attended Grace College
Related experience: Served 10 years on the National Spina Bifida Board of Directors located in Washington D.C.; served 14 years on the Northern Indiana Spina Bifida board; attended over 100 Concord School Board meetings, task force meetings, A+ school improvement meetings and Concord Community building expansion planning meetings; severed on PTO for six years at South Side, East Side and Concord Intermediate; Currently serving on the Elkhart County 4-H Fair board as Vice President; six years service on the Elkhart County 4-H Fair Board; Faith United Methodist family activities committee member; and attended Indiana School Board Association candidate forum in July 2012

Why have you decided to run for election?
Larry Mast and Candy Yoder have been Concord School Board members for a combined 35 years, therefore there is a need to have a qualified and informed individual to continue the work and progress. I have been involved in the Concord Community School (CCS) system for the past 16 years by regularly attending School Board Meetings, PTO at three CCS buildings, Accountability in Action task force, A+ school improvement member, New Building/community member and using that background and experience to maintain the momentum of the Board. To be involved and “give back” to Public Education and the Concord Community school “family”.
What do you feel are some of the biggest issues or challenges currently facing the school board, or schools in general?
Lack of financial support is one of many challenges facing schools and every publicly funded organization as our community is still in economic recovery and Public School Funds continue to be budget cut targets.
Despite the lack of financial support, State standards and expectations along with evaluation standards continue to escalate (important note: Concord and other Elkhart County school corporations are excelling despite).
Time involved accomplishing school improvement plans, evaluation standards, and expectations balanced against student learning.
Preparing Students for their life after high school.
How would you work to address those issues if elected?
Evaluating where and how Concord Community Schools can continue to be financially resourceful.
Deliver the message to State officials regarding necessary relief to Public Schools budget with increases of financial support .
Listening to all involved regarding the amount of time necessary to achieve increased standards .
Jeremiah Matthews

Age: 73
Education: Elkhart High School graduate; two years at IUSB
Occupation: retired maintenance IUSB; two years business law
Why have you decided to run for election?
I believe in public education, open communication and transparency. I will work with board members teachers and administrators to create a long-term vision and continue to improve the graduation rate. I will also work to make sure teachers have the resources they need to reflect the student body they serve.
What do you feel are some of the biggest issues or challenges currently facing the school board, or schools in general?
The budget.
How would you work to address those issues ifelected?
I would work within by-laws of corporation as well as federal, state and local law.

Charlie Daniels Band coming to Shipshewana
