Five Goshen-area bands going to state competition

INDIANAPOLIS — Call it an Elkhart County sweep.

In Class B and Class C semistate competition Saturday, all five high school marching bands from the Goshen area qualified for state competition next Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The bands from Goshen, Concord and Northridge high schools finished among the top 10 in Class B at Pike High School, thereby qualifying for the finals of the Indiana State School Music Association’s state competition.

Fairfield and NorthWood competed at Decatur Central High School and finished in the top 10 in Class C.

Clear skies, cool temperatures and a constant breeze were the background for the 20 Class B semistate bands competing for the top 10 spots and a trip to state.

The Goshen Crimson Marching Band was the first local band to take the field with its performance of “Musica d’organo.” Unlike regionals, there were no technical glitches and the organ music piped through clearly.

“I thought it went awesome. I am so glad there were no technical problems this week,” said Drum Major Lauren Detweiler. “What we did was great.”

Band Director Tom Cox was happy with the show.

“They did great. The weather’s not too bad. We had some blinds fall over in the wind, but there were no technical issues and the show went very well,” Cox said.

The Marching Minutemen of Concord High School were the next local band to march onto the field with “Clash of Patterns.”

“I thought it was really good. They had a lot of energy,” said Senior Drum Major Austin Robbins after the band’s performance. “It’s been a really long week and I’m really proud of the kids. They did phenomenally.”

Pulling together a tight performance with 218 band members is no small feat, and Director Scott Spradling was pleased with the outcome.

“Compared to Bands of America and regionals, that was a better run for us. We held together better,” Spradling said. “We added another ending on to it. That being said, I am really pleased with the kids.”

The Raider Band of Northridge High School was the final local band on the field with its fast-paced performance of ‘Et In Terra Pax” (And On Earth, Peace).

“That was a great way to end our show today — with a great exclamation point,” said Assistant Director Bryce Cone. “That was a very exciting performance and the ending was especially exciting.”

Director Brad Zook echoed those sentiments as he talked with the band immediately after the performance.

“I hope you enjoyed that performance because I certainly did!” Zook said. “It was thrilling. You did an awesome job.”

The other Class B marching bands on their way to state competition are Plainfield, Greenwood, Northview (Brazil), North Side (Fort Wayne), Jasper, Floyd Central (Floyd Knobs), and Munster.

Class C

Other Class C bands going to state are Angola, Norwell, North Harrison, Concordia-Lutherian, Vincennes-Lincoln, Edgewood, Western and Beechgrove.
