GOSHEN —
The national anthem is out and “America the Beautiful” is in.
That’s the word from Goshen College President James Brenneman, who recently announced that “America the Beautiful” will be played before select sporting events at the college as an alternative to the national anthem starting this fall.
Back in June, the Goshen College Board of Directors asked Brenneman to find an alternative to playing the national anthem that “fits with sports tradition, that honors country and that resonates with Goshen College’s core values and respects the views of diverse constituencies.”
In coming up with his decision in favor of “America the Beautiful,” Brenneman said he considered a wide range of viewpoints including alumni, students, faculty, staff, Mennonite church members and local community members.
“The Board of Directors unanimously endorsed my decision that the first verse of ‘America the Beautiful’ be played or sung with the U.S. flag present,” Brenneman said in a recent statement. “A brief prayer may be offered at the discretion of the coach.”
