Juveniles take boat on Lake Wawasee 'joy ride'

Theft charges are now pending for two juveniles accused of stealing a boat on Lake Wawasee Friday evening.

According to officials with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Officer Jerry Hoerdt was on boat patrol at 10:30 p.m. Friday when he witnessed a boat traveling at approximately 30 mph across the lake. Hoerdt reportedly followed the boat with his emergency lights activated for some distance before the suspect boat came to a stop in the area of Enchanted Hills.

Hoerdt identified the operator as a 14-year-old juvenile accompanied by a 13-year-old passenger. Police said the two juveniles admitted to stealing the boat at around 8 p.m. from the Enchanted Hills area to take it for a “joy ride”. The boat was undamaged.

Adult guardians were summoned to a public boat ramp to pick up their children. The youths now face charges of theft and will be summoned into the Kosciusko County probation department.

The owner of the boat was located Sunday at his residence in Nappanee and advised of the incident.
