GOSHEN —
Goshen College and University of Notre Dame researchers released a three-volume study on the Hispanic population in north-central Indiana today.
The study has found that the Latino communities in Elkhart, Noble and St. Joseph counties are growing rapidly and consist mostly of low-income people who have low graduation rates. However, the majority of them have managed to buy their own homes.
The study was conducted by the Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning at Goshen College and the Institute for Latino Studies at Notre Dame.
The study is a mix of demographics and interviews with Hispanic residents in the three counties.
Rebecca Hernandez, director for the Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning at GC, said, "These reports, in my opinion, are cutting-edge research."
It is the first time a comprehensive study has been done on the local Hispanic population and what their experiences have been as they migrated to north-central Indiana.
The report, using U.S. Census data, states that 14 percent of Elkhart County’s population is Hispanic and 28 percent of Goshen’s population is Hispanic.
Those populations include a large percentage of young people born here, according to researchers.
