Police: Teen accidentally shot himself

GOSHEN — A 17-year-old boy was shot outside his home at 1824 College Manor Drive, just south of College Avenue, at 3:43 p.m. Tuesday.

Police were called by a resident of 1829 College Manor and found the shooting scene at 1824 College Manor.

Kenyon Hartfield, 1824 College Manor, said his 17-year-old nephew was shot. He said Hartfield’s mother took the boy to the Goshen hospital for treatment. He did not name his nephew.

“I was on the couch watching TV when I heard what I thought was fireworks,” Hartfield said. He said his nephew was shot in the leg.

Police investigating at the scene found a pistol-grip shotgun in the grass in the front yard at the duplex home. One investigator indicated that one theory was that the shooting may have been accidental. About 8 p.m. Goshen police issued a press released indicating that the investigation revealed that the juvenile suffered a self-inflicted, non-life-threatening wound to his left foot.

Police did not report on the patient’s condition. They said the incident is under investigation.

At the north unit of the duplex, a resident was babysitting, and parents arrived to pick up their children during the investigation by police. At least one pre-schooler was escorted from that home by a detective to her parents, who were waiting for her at the curb.

“It’s really a quiet neighborhood,” said Russell Coon, who lives at 1805-B College Manor, across the street from the shooting scene. “We don’t have a history of crime here.”

The U.S. Census Bureau reported last week that Goshen’s population increased to 32,064 in 2012. It’s the first time the city has eclipsed 32,000 residents. Do you think population growth is good for the city?

Yes, having more people increases the tax base and strengthens the community
No, continual growth has made for overcrowding in schools and overwhelmed infrastructure.
