The Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau staff is encouraging local residents to bundle-up and get ready for some frosty fun in Elkhart County.
Activities include:
Fire & Ice
Kick off the New Year watching master ice carvers chisel, saw and transform 300-pound blocks of ice into sculptures at the Fire & Ice Festival Jan. 6 to 7 in downtown Goshen. Guests can then warm up sampling steaming bowls of chili during the Jan. 7 Chili Fire Competition. There will also be fire pits for roasting marshmallows. Admission is free.
Snowman contest
Families can show off their snowman-building skills and compete for prizes during the Snowman Building Contest Jan. 21. The contest will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at Kardzhali Park on NIBCO Parkway in downtown Elkhart. The cost is $5 per family.
Ice fishing derby
Anglers can “chill out” at the eighth annual Elkhart Ice Fishing Derby Feb. 11 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ideal Beach Water Park on Heaton Lake. Sponsored by Michiana Bank Anglers Club, it’s a two-person team derby, so the team with the most qualified fish wins. Registration is at 7 a.m. and there is a $50 per team fee.
Ice park
There will be various special events at the NIBCO Ice & Water Park on NIBCO Parkway along downtown Elkhart’s RiverWalk. The rink stocks more than 200 pairs of skates in various sizes. Special events include Free Hot Chocolate Thursdays; Groundhog Day, Feb. 2, (free admission for anyone wearing a groundhog hat or costume); and Date Skate (couples skate for one admission) on Feb. 11. The ice park is open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons plus Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. There are admission and skate rental fees.
