LIGONIER —
The annual Marshmallow Festival has seen some bumps this year, but everything is on track for a good celebration, according to Sandy Magnus, one of the organizers of the event.
“The community has been coming out for us,” Magnus said. “We’re getting donations from people who have never donated before. People are really coming out for us.”
The festival will run for Labor Day Weekend from Aug. 31 through Sept. 3. Magnus and her husband, current Festival Chair Dave Magnus, have worked for the last few weeks to get everything organized, she said.
“Most of the events are lined up,” she said. “We’re encouraging people to look at our website (www.marshmallowfestival.com) for the most up-to-date information. Some event times have changed since our brochures went out.”
Festival Vice Chair Margarita White said she is looking forward to Friday’s marshmallow roast, as well as some of the concerts planned for the weekend. The roast will run from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Kenny Park, along with pony rides from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and a rock band during the time of the roast.
“[Planning the festival] has been a bit stressful,” White said Monday. “We’ve got most of the events already scheduled, though. We’ve had about 20 people helping with organizing.”
Also featured are children’s activities on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, as well as several concerts Saturday evening, including country musician Zach DuBois, according to White.
DuBois was born and raised in Elkhart and recently graduated from the University of Notre Dame, according to his website. Also on schedule for Saturday are the Twang Gang and the Blue Light Parade from the Ligonier Fire Department.
White said Monday will feature a 7 a.m. pancake breakfast, a 10 a.m. talent show, the police uniform inspection and the Grand Parade, which begins at 2 p.m.
“It’s a very packed weekend,” White said. “It’s full of a variety of things to do.”
White said spots are still available in the parade for anyone interested. Contact information is available at www.marshmallowfestival.com.
