Library transforms into pyramid for a night

GOSHEN — The Goshen Public Library turned into an Egyptian tomb, if just for a night.

The library hosted an “Egyptology” activity night for children April 16. The activities included cutting and decorating a paper Egyptian barge, making a mask, writing their names in hieroglyphics and creating an Egyptian scroll.

The children also got a chance to hunt for “scarabas beetles” hidden around the library’s children’s department. The child who found the most paper beetles won a copy of the book “Egyptology” on which the program was based.

According to children’s department director Margret Kownover, the “-ology” series of books is very popular and includes titles such as “Spyology”, “Vampireology”, “Oceanology” and “Wizardology.”

The library has turned six of the nine books into activity nights this year, and according to Kownover they have all been well-attended.

According to Kownover, the books are so popular with children that the department made them reference books so that they could be viewed by more children and not checked out.

At each of the activity nights, which have included “Oceanology” and “Spyology,” among others, the kids have had a chance to win a copy of the book.

Kownover says that based on the popularity that the children’s department will adopt more of the books into activity nights.
