Elkhart County’s jobless rate dipped to 8.6 percent in May, according to figures released Friday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
The county workforce numbered 96,552 last month, with 8,317 people out of work. The revised April jobless estimate for Elkhart County was 8.7 percent, with 8,265 workers unemployed out of a 94,686-person labor force.
The May jobless rate for Elkhart County marked almost a 2 percent drop from year-ago levels. The unemployment figure for May 2011 was 10.5 percent, when 9,675 workers out of a 92,528-person workforce were jobless.
Goshen
In the city of Goshen, the May jobless rate was estimated at 7.8 percent, with 1,163 people out of a 14,990-person labor force out of work.
That marked a drop from the revised April figure of 8.3 percent. That month, 1,224 workers were jobless out of a 14,767-person workforce.
Goshen’s May jobless rate showed a 2.5 percent drop from year-ago levels. The May 2011 figure was 10.3 percent, with 1,496 unemployed workers out of a 14,480-person workforce.
Elkhart
The city of Elkhart’s May unemployment rate was 10.4 percent. Out of a labor force numbering 23,890, 2,491 people were jobless.
Elkhart’s revised April estimate was 11 percent, with 2,586 workers jobless out of a 23,545-person labor force.
The May 2011 unemployment estimate for Elkhart was 13 percent, with 3,001 workers out of a 23,095-person workforce jobless.
Surrounding counties
Unemployment figures for surrounding counties — listed in order of May, April and May 2011 jobless rates — are:
• Kosciusko — 6.9, 6.6 and 7.7 percent
• LaGrange — 7.2, 7.1 and 8.8 percent
• Noble — 8.4, 8.3 and 10.2 percent
• St. Joseph — 8.9, 8.9 and 10 percent
Indiana
Indiana’s unemployment rate held steady at 7.9 percent for May after steadily falling for the past year.
Figures released Friday by the state Department of Workforce Development show Indiana’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate remained unchanged from April as about 250,000 people were looking for jobs last month.
The state jobless rate is slightly below the national mark of 8.2 percent.
Indiana’s unemployment mark has been going down since it was at 9.3 percent last summer.
The state’s highest jobless rates are in Fayette, Vermillion and Sullivan counties. They all have unemployment rates of at least 10 percent.
