SHIPSHEWANA —
The gymnasium at the Shipshewana-Scott Elementary school was packed to the rafters with excited children and their proud fathers for the annual “Donuts with Dad” event.
After touring the classrooms, the large group was entertained by the children singing and a puppet show. When asked if they had a good day with their children the fathers seated around the table all smiled and nodded their heads. “I think it is great,” said Lynn Stutzman. “I’ve been coming for the past three years. It is important.”
Phillip Schwartz had his son Jaylen in his lap and his two daughters, Katrina, 9, and Andrea, 7, were standing close to him. “This day is a special opportunity for a father to be with his children,” Schwartz said. “It is a chance to take the time out of your ‘busy’ schedule and just be there.
“In these times with the world the way it is, I think parents must take time to spend with their children. If we don’t start when they are young — it will not lead to a good future.”
This event is scheduled every fall — last week was the day for the students to share with their mothers at “Moments with Mom.”
