Goshen Chamber members hosted at Kaizen Grill

GOSHEN — Members of the Goshen Chamber of Commerce attended an open house Wednesday hosted by the new Japanese restaurant, Kaizen Hibachi Grill Sushi & Bar, 2820 Elkhart Road, which opened last month.

The restaurant is in the building that for many years housed the Pagoda Inn and more recently Kings Buffet.

Partners Jay and Edison Zheng welcomed about three dozen guests at the Chamber reception, explaining that their restaurant features traditional Japanese dishes, sushi and a hibachi grill.

Last month Jay Zheng found himself in the middle of a communication problem between the Elkhart Chamber of Commerce and the Goshen Chamber of Commerce. The restaurant owner invited Elkhart Chamber officials to his restaurants grand opening. Elkhart Chamber officials and Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore arrived to cut the ceremonial ribbon. But nobody thought to mention the event to the Goshen Chamber members, giving the impression that Goshen Chamber officials were not invited.

After some Goshen residents began talking on social media about the lack of Goshen officials at the grand opening, Jay Zheng announced he would host Goshen Chamber members at a special open house, and that’s what occurred Wednesday.

During the ceremony Jay Zheng introduced his head chef, his cousin, John Zheng, who came here from New York.

Edison has also worked in the restaurant business in New York, while Jay worked in his family’s restaurant in the Chicago area.

Chamber President David Daugherty commented on the food and the chefs’ performances at the hibachi grill in the restaurant.

“The food is awesome and the show is great,” Daugherty said.

The menu is extensive, with 20 choices of appetizers, including beef rolls, grilled rock shrimp, battered soft shell crab and Japanese beef dumplings.

There are also classic Japanese rolls, nigiri and sashimi and specialty rolls offered.
