GOSHEN — More details have emerged in the case of a Goshen man who allegedly set fire to his own apartment this week.
Trever Bouck, 24, 114 S. Seventh St., remains incarcerated in the Elkhart County jail on a Class A felony arson charge. His bond is set at $250,000.
Authorities allege Bouck gave conflicting reports about what he was doing the day of the fire.
At 8:28 a.m. Tuesday, Goshen police and fire personnel were called to a fire at Bouck’s home. According to court documents, they found Lindsay Baker standing on an upstairs deck yelling for help as smoke and fire were coming from the apartment.
Baker told them she could not go through her apartment due to the smoke. She said she was unaware of where her 6-month-old daughter was, in addition to her boyfriend, Trever Bouck.
Firefighters got Baker down from the deck, and she was transported to IU Health Goshen Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. The fire was determined to be arson.
Goshen police Detective Mitchell Herschberger interviewed Baker at the hospital. Baker reportedly told Herschberger she and Bouck had gotten into a heated argument earlier that morning.
“Baker advised that she went to bed at (6 a.m.) and was woken by the smell of smoke and a beeping noise,” Herschberger stated in a probable cause affidavit. “When she got up she realized that the apartment was on fire and she could not locate her child or Bouck.”
Police interviewed Bouck, who said he had left the home with his daughter. He reportedly said he saw police and fire personnel at his apartment when he was walking home.
“Bouck said he had no idea on what had happened or how the fire started,” the affidavit reads.
Herschberger told Bouck that the fire was being ruled as an arson, and that he felt Bouck had a part in it since the fire started after he’d left with his daughter.
“Bouck then advised that it was an accident and that he was sorry it happened,” the affidavit reads.
According to the court document, Bouck said he spilled some alcohol on the carpet and that it accidentally caught on fire. However, Bouck later reportedly told police “that he knowingly poured alcohol on the floor and tried to light it as he wanted to harm himself.”
“Bouck said that he got some paper and was trying to light it to start the fire,” the affidavit from Herschberger reads. “Bouck also advised that he thought the fire was out so he grabbed his daughter and left the apartment while Baker was sleeping.”
Bouck is scheduled to appear in Elkhart Superior Court 2 for an initial hearing Monday morning.
