Starting today at 6:30 p.m., library staffers will be featuring more books in the “ology” series, beginning with  “Wizardology.” The program will include making wizard hats, wands and potions, and the chance to win a copy of “Wizardology.”

Storytime Express

Wednesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m., children are invited to listen to stories from Reading Rainbow. Fingerplays, songs and a craft activity are also planned. This program is free, and is recommended for ages children ages 2 to 5.

Book clubs

The Boys & Girls Book Club meets through mid-April. Boys meet every Tuesday and girls meet every Thursday at 4 p.m. Visit or call the Children’s Desk at 537-0241 to register for this third- through fifth-grade reading club.

The First Grade Reading Club meets every Wednesday through March 20 at 4 p.m. in the Children’s Storyhour Room.  Call 537-0241 for more information.

F.R.O.S.T

“F.R.O.S.T.” — the Fun Reading Over Snow Term children’s winter reading program — starts today and runs through Feb. 22.

Participants are invited to the library to pick up a record sheet. On their own, children will record and track their reading progress when they read a book, or when someone reads a book to them.

When a participant has finished reading 10 picture books, or five chapter books, they can come to the library to receive a free prize. They can ski the library’s “mountain slope” successfully and get a chance to win a grand prize. If they read a book from the library’s Winter Reading Selected List, participants get an extra chance for the grand prize.  

This program is open to children through fifth grade. Note:  Parents of children younger than age 7 must accompany their child while participating in ski game.

Crafty Bandits

The Crafty Bandits group meets Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

This month, students in sixth through 12th grades will make beads using old magazines. No sign-up is required. Supplies will be provided.

Tax assistance

Volunteers will be on hand again this year to prepare taxes for low-income and senior citizens. Appointments are available on Friday mornings and early afternoons beginning Feb. 1 and running through March 28. Call the library’s circulation desk at 533-9531 to schedule an appointment.

Financial consultant

Library staffers are planning on having an Edward Jones financial consultant answer questions from the public around the fiscal cliff and debt ceiling. They’re seeking input as to what would be a good time. Call 848-7458 and ask for Daryl.

Pie contest

A pie contest fundraiser presented by the Friends of the Library is scheduled for Jan. 28. Judging will take place at noon, and entries are due between 10 and 11:45 a.m., along with a $2 registration fee per entered pie.  

Categories will be fruit/nut or cream.  All pies will be sold after the judging at $2 per slice or $10 for a whole pie. The Friends group also appreciates any pies donated just for the sale. Register at the library.

Preschool storytime  

Children are invited to join Miss Desi on a “trek to the Arctic” to meet the polar bear. Children will read stories, sing songs and make a craft.

Registration is not required.  Sessions take place today at 10:30 a.m. or Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.

‘Valentines for Vets’

For two weeks starting Wednesday, the public is invited to the library to make a “Valentine for a Vet.” Materials will be provided.

Lego Club

Lego Club will meet Friday at 3 p.m. Children ages 5 and older can participate.

Teen Otaku Club

Teens will meet Jan. 29 at 6 p.m.  This club is for teens who are interested in Manga and Anime. Call 848-7458 for details.

Snowman craft

Patrons are invited to make snowmen crafts with Miss Shari Tuesday. The crafts will be available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Science Fair help

Library staffers will host three additional Science Fair workshops on Jan. 28 and Feb. 4 and 7.

Community Book Read

Kosciusko County residents are invited to take part in the Community Book Read. This year’s book selection is “My Antonia” by Willa Cather.

Free copies of “My Antonia” can be found in the bright yellow bin in the teen area of the Milford library. Patrons are invited to read a copy and then return it to the bin. The books will be available until March. A free digital download of the book is available at Amazon.com. Readers can also read the entire book online at http://www.willacather.org.

A book discussion of “My Antonia” is scheduled at the library Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Preschool Story Time

Sign-up is under way for winter Preschool Story Time. Stories, fingerplays, a craft activity and snacks are offered at each session. Story Time will be offered on Wednesdays  Feb. 6 to March 13 at 10:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. or Thursdays, Feb. 7 to March 14 at 7 p.m.

Magazine sale

The Friends of the Library annual magazine sale fundraiser is under way. Magazines are on sale for 10 cents each.

Craft activity

A “Make It, Take It Craft” activity is set for today from 10 a.m. to noon in the Children’s Department. Children in preschool through grade school are invited to participate.

‘Yak, Snack and Read’

The “Yak, Snack and Read” book group will meet Tuesday at 1 p.m. to discuss “Crow Lake” by Mary Lawson. At 7 p.m. participants will talk about “How To Make An American Quilt” by Whitney Otto. “Yak” books are available at the front desk.

Computer class

A “Beginning Computer Class” is set for Jan. 29 at 6:30 p.m.

This class is designed to introduce the basics of computer use. Participants can learn to find programs, learn to use a mouse, learn how to turn on the computer and more. Registration is required.

After-school program

An “After-School Special” is set for Jan. 29 at 3:30 p.m. This program for students in kindergarten through fifth grade will feature the them “Celebrate the Newbery Year.”

Participants will find out which book has won the 2013 Newbery Award, and also create a foil rubbing to take home. Registration is required.

‘Reading Club’

The “Reading Club” will meet Jan. 31 at 6:30 p.m. in the library meeting room. The program will be a screening of the movie “The Lucky One” in advance of the discussion of the book by the same name set for Feb. 7.
