GC students help youngsters learn science is fun

SHIPSHEWANA — Six Shipshewana-Scott Elementary School students won first place in one of six divisions featured at the school’s Learning Fair last week.

There were winners chosen in baking, student inventions, science, language arts, arts and crafts and sewing categories. The Learning Fair happens once a year.It is an opportunity for the students to pursue projects of interest to them, but not necessarily purely scientific in nature. They take on a project in which they can explore and experiment to expand their knowledge.

Winners included:

• Fourth-grade student, Hannah Davidson 9. She chose sewing as her project.

“My mother and my grandmother both sew and quilt,” Hannah said. “I went to the store and picked out my own fabric colors and prints and sewed it myself. I have sewn with a machine before. I enjoy it and I like to make pretty things.”

• Nine year-old Austin Christner. He used his woodworking skills to create his own stock yard model.

“I went to a stockyard and I liked it so I made one of my own with animals inside,” he said. He even included photos of his creation in different stages of development. He put his name on the stockyard’s sign behind him.

• Seven year-old Tyler Acord. He won his first-place ribbon in student invention. The first-grade student invented a double-ended peanut butter jar. With two lids you can store it on its top and as the level of the the peanut butter goes down, the remainder will flow to the other end and accumulate. This relieves the user of digging deep into the jar to scrape out the last of the peanut butter at the bottom, resulting in their knuckles and fingers covered in peanut butter.

“I cut the bottom off of two jars and then with hot glue and heavy, strong tape I put them back together by their bottom ends so you can open both ends,” Tyler explained.

• Nine-year-old third grade student Elijah Hostetler, who entered the history category.

“I have always admired Benjamin Franklin,” he said. “I decided I wanted to know more about him. He was married to Deborah for a long time and I did not know he had a wife. Besides being a scientist and inventor he is in the Chess Hall Of Fame. I learned a lot about him besides being a founding father.”

• Evan Brown, a third-grader. He won first place for his entry in the baking division.

“I didn’t know what I was really interested in but I know I was kinda hungry so I made cupcakes,” he said. “This is my first attempt so the first batch didn’t rise. I had to throw it out and make another. It worked. I like Reese’s so I made peanut butter and chocolate cupcakes from a recipe my mother got off the Internet.”

• Caleb Miller, 8, a second-grade student. He won first place for his entry in the science division.

“I washed four of these dirty bunny heads in different soaps,” he said. “You would suspect it was Tide that would clean the best, it was Dawn.”
