GOSHEN —
Goshen officials are making sandbags available to city residents this weekend in case flooding occurs.
The heavy wet snow that fell earlier in the week contains up to 1.2 inches of moisture, according to the National Weather Service. Coupled with an approaching rain system that is expected to arrive in the Goshen area Sunday and drop from .5 to 1 inch of rain, the NWS is forecasting localized flooding in low-lying areas.
Recent snowfall, the likelihood of temperatures in the upper 40s, predicted rainfall and hard pack from frozen ground all add up to an increased potential for street and property flooding, according to Goshen Stormwater Engineer Dustin Sailor. The Goshen Street Department will have staff on hand during the weekend in case there are residents who need sandbags. Residents will need to be prepared to fill and transport bags themselves. The Street Department is located at 475 Steury Ave.
The Elkhart River is now at 2.74 feet. The river’s flood stage is 7 feet.
