Pontoon rides, nature hikes, wagon rides to the marsh, parachute games, fishing, learning about animal signs, a petting zoo — these activities and more were part of the recipe for a fun-filled day at Camp Amigo / Amigo Centre for the 450 kindergarten through third-grade students from Jefferson Elementary School May 8.
According to Cheryl Mast, coordinator of outdoor/environmental education at Amigo Centre, Jefferson Elementary was one of the recipients of the Kleenex grant this year and chose to use that money for an all-school outing. So the school staff and students traveled to Camp Amigo for a day of outdoor education.
One child remarked that “jumping up and down on the big sponge” was the favorite part of his experience. While studying about marshes students were given the opportunity to jump on the mat of peat, which is like a big sponge. Another student caught a 12-inch bass.
