ELKHART — A warrant has been issued for a Goshen man who Elkhart County Prosecutor Curtis Hill said was involved in a deadly attempted burglary in Elkhart Oct. 3.
Hill, in a press conference Tuesday morning, Oct. 9, 2012, said Anthony Sharp, 18, Goshen will be charged along with Blake Layman, 16, Elkhart, Jose Quiroz, 16, Elkhart, and Levi Sparks 17, Elkhart, with felony murder. Layman, Quiroz and Sparks are already in custody at the Elkhart County Jail.
A fifth accomplice in the attempted burglary, Hill said, Danzele Johnson, 21, Goshen, was shot and killed by the homeowner, Rodney Scott, 1919 Frances St., Elkhart.
Scott will not be charged with any crime, Hill said.
The prosecutor gave some details of what happened that afternoon.
Scott was asleep in his upstairs bedroom at his Frances Street home when four of the five men broke through two doors to enter the home, Hill said. One stayed outside. A couple of the men grabbed knives from the kitchen, Hill said.
Scott was awakened by the break-in and grabbed his gun. He fired five shots, Hill said. Layman was grazed and Johnson, who was a NorthWood High School graduate, was killed.
The three suspects who survived hid in a bedroom, Hill said.
Scott called for police and an ambulance.
The homeowner acted as he should have, the prosecutor said.
Three of the four surviving suspects were caught and Sharp remains at large, Hill said. A warrant has been issued for his arrest. And investigators with the prosecutors office believe that Sharp is still in the area.
Anyone who has information on Sharp’s whereabouts is asked to call 911 or local police.
