Goshen marching band wins big at Penn Invitational

MISHAWAKA — Saturday’s Carnival of Bands hosted by the Penn High School Kingsmen marked the third week of marching competition for local bands.

And for the second week in a row, the Goshen Crimson Marching Band took top honors in Class B competition, with Northridge placing second and Concord placing third.

The Goshen marching band, with its performance of “Musica d’organo” under the direction of Tom Cox, Josh Kaufman and Max Mault, was awarded Best Visual, Best Music and Best General Effect, as well as first place with a score of 74.2.

Director Tom Cox was pleased with the show.

“It was good,” he said. “You know on the ground it’s so hard to tell, but I’d say it was a good run. Overall, it felt like a really good show.”

The competition wasn’t far behind.

The Northridge Raider Marching Band performing its entire show for the first time, took second place with a score of 72.6. Their show “Et In Terra Pax” (On Earth, Peace) features the music of Jan Van Der Roost.

Even before the awards were given, Assistant Band Director Bryce Cone knew the competition would be close.

“It was the best first impression we’ve ever given and I’m excited to see how we’re going to stack up against the competition,” Cone said.

Director Brad Zook also knew the band performed well.

“First time through the whole thing and it went well,” said Zook. “The ending is very difficult and we have a lot left to do, but I was very happy.”

Just three-tenths of a point behind Northridge were the Concord Marching Minutemen under the direction of Scott Spradling.

The band performed “Clash of Patterns”  which includes musical selections from The Art of the Fugue, Blue Rondo a la Turk and Prelude, Fugue and Riffs.

“I was very pleased. We added more show and other new things,” Spradling said. “Earlier we got hailed and sleeted on and the fact that we were able to come out here and do a performance in nice weather and around a lot of other great bands was a really awesome event for us. I’m proud of the kids and we’re just going to keep working.”

Receiving participation awards in Class B were Dekalb, North Side, Elkhart Central, Elkhart Memorial, Plymouth, John Adams and Lowell, respectively.

Class C

Competition was tight between the top two bands in Class C with Fairfield Marching Band coming out on top by three-tenths of point over Leo High School.

The Fairfield Marching Pride with its performance of “One” took first place and Best General Effect with a score of 63.35.

Leo High School Roar of the Lions was awarded Best Music and Best Visual and second place with a score of 63.05. John Glenn High School place third with a score of 57.8 and Wheeler High School and Knox High School received participation awards.

Fairfield Director Andrew Muth was happy with the show.

“We are right where we need to be. Today was a challenging day. We ended practice right as it started to hail on us. We came out here and didn’t get a warmup because it was pouring,” Muth said. “But the kids turned it on and put on a great show. I couldn’t be more proud. Leo was tough competition and they had a great show.”

ISSMA district competition begins next Saturday at Concord High School.
