Woman hurt trying to douse Dunlap house fire

DUNLAP — A Concord Township woman was injured when she tried to extinguish a fire at her home Tuesday.

According to Concord Fire Inspector Bob Harbaugh, a woman who lived at 24099 Himebaugh Ave. discovered a fire on the outside of her home and received superficial burns.

“She tried to put it out with a garden hose,” Harbaugh said, “but it just got too hot.”

The woman asked firefighters not to release her name.

The fire was reported at 8:53 a.m. Firefighters from Concord, Harrison and Jefferson townships responded and were at the scene until 10:19 a.m. Harbaugh said firefighters contained the blaze to the home’s attic and the outside of the wood-frame, single-story house.

“The firemen did a real nice job of keeping it from going into the home,” he said.

But, the house was extensively damage and there was water damage to the kitchen, he said.

The Elkhart County Red Cross reported its staff is helping the family of three that lived in the home. Anyone wanting to help the family may call the Red Cross at 293-6519.

Harbaugh said he is now working to find out what started the blaze.
