This weekend is the Championship Rodeo Finals weekend for the Super Kicker Rodeo at the Michiana Event Center in Howe. The rodeo started Friday and will continue tonight and Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for children ages 5 to 12. Children 4 and younger enter free.
“We have one heck of a show for the entire family,” rodeo owner Cathy Johnston said. “For this, our finals weekend, we have dozens of cowboys competing. We have 23 bull riders, top 20 barrel racers, 11 bronc riders and lots of other events and special features.”
Joe and his wife Cathy live in Paris, Mich., and have owned “Super Kicker Rodeo” since 1994.
“We have 25 shows a year throughout the Midwest,” explained Cathy as she backed a horse into its stall.
This weekend is the finals in saddle bronc, bareback bronc, barrel racing and bull riding, roping and, of course, the rodeo clowns. Awards will be given out to the finalists tonight.
“On New Year’s Eve, we have the beginning of our 2013 season, Cathy said. “That is the first day to accumulate points, so we expect some good local and traveling talent to compete that night.”
After this the Johnstons will return to their farm in Michigan to plan next year’s events and make leather goods and saddles. Both Cathy and Joe are certified saddle makers.
