Concord High School’s Dance Team competed in the Tremaine Regional Dance Competition and two-day workshop held in Chicago. The dancers returned with 11 awards and a scholarship winner to Tremaine’s National Competition/Workshop in Orlando.
“I was so incredibly proud to be their dance teacher and to watch them accomplish so much as a team,” said Stephanie Pairitz, Concord’s Dance director. “It is such a fantastic opportunity for our dancers to be judged by and to study dance with some of LA’s top dancers and choreographers”
Concord’s Best Dance Crew won a first-place award for their performance of “Electric Madness,” and Liangjun Wang, dance team member, received a first for her ethnic solo, “Spring.” Concord group performances “Driven” and hip hop number “Gonna Die Young” received second-place awards, losing the first-place position by as little as 0.3 of a point. All dances qualified for Nationals in Orlando this summer.
In addition to these awards, Concord dancers Sandra Chaula, Katrell Jemison, Eugenio Lara, Diamond Burdine, Malik Smith and Darnell Bean received Inspiration awards and Diamond Burdine won the freestyle dance competition and was awarded a scholarship to the Orlando Nationals workshop and competition in July.
There were approximately 800 dancers who competed in the freestyle competition, with the five finalists competing during the faculty show, and out of the five, two of the dancers, Burdine and Lara, were from Concord.
