GOSHEN —
A Goshen teen charged with armed robbery was denied a bond reduction Thursday.
Andres Torres Jr., 17, appeared in Elkhart Circuit Court with public defender Jeff Majerek. Judge Terry Shewmaker ruled that Torres’ bond remain at $100,000.
Torres and Darius Thomas, 17, Goshen, are accused of robbing the gas station at 224 N. Main St., Goshen, May 20. Prosecutors say a shotgun was used in the robbery.
Goshen police were called to Thomas’ home May 22 in reference to a shooting. According to police, Thomas had accidentally shot himself in the left foot with a pistol-gripped, sawed-off shotgun.
Officers later linked Thomas and Torres to the gas station robbery.
Judge Shewmaker pointed out that Torres was on probation when he was arrested in connection with the hold-up.
“It’s a little problematic, isn’t it?,” Shewmaker asked the defendant.
“Yes, sir,” Torres replied.
Thomas also appeared in Circuit Court Thursday. Wheelchair-bound, he was assisted into the courtroom and to the defense table by security officers.
As with Torres, Thomas had been scheduled for a bond-reduction hearing. However, that hearing was continued after Thomas suffered an anxiety attack in the courtroom.
“Are you all right, sir?,” Shewmaker asked Thomas, who replied that he was not. Thomas’ heavy breathing was audible in the courtroom’s audience section.
Thomas and Torres are charged with robbery while armed with a deadly weapon, a Class B felony. If convicted, they each face up to 20 years in prison.
Superior Court 3
In other court proceedings Thursday:
• William Ashcraft, 53, Goshen, was sentenced in Elkhart Superior Court 3 to 45 years in prison. He’d earlier pleaded guilty to two Class A felony counts of child molestation and attempted child molestation, as well as two Class D felony counts of dissemination of matter harmful to a minor.
