Middlebury man drowns in Michigan


CASS COUNTY, Mich. — A Middlebury man drowned in Baldwin Lake Saturday, according to Cass County authorities.

Porter Township deputies reported that Larry Bontrager, 59, was at a Baldwin Lake cottage. He went fishing around 11:30 a.m. and had not returned home. He was found in the water near his boat around 3:15 p.m.

Bontrager was taken via Porter Township ambulance to Elkhart General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Cass County sheriff’s officers were assisted at the scene by Porter Township ambulance personnel and firefighters, as well as the Michigan State Police.

Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood reported that Bontrager was not wearing a life jacket.

Elkhart County Coroner John White is assisting with the investigation.
