GOSHEN — Potholes can pop up over night. And the longer they’re left, the larger they may become.
The crews of the Goshen Street Department are routinely inspecting and repairing city streets during months when the temperature fluctuates above and below 32 degrees. During these conditions, the pavement collapses into potholes as traffic drives over the cavities that result from the heaving/contracting of any moisture that may have seeped under the surface.
If potholes are in Indiana state or federal highways, they can be reported to the Elkhart office of Indiana Department of Transportation at 294-3143. In Goshen, there are four such highways:
• Ind. 4 — Lincoln Avenue, from Main Street east to the city limits
• Ind. 15 — from the city limits on North Main Street, south to Pike Street, east to Main Street, south to the city limits
• Ind. 119 — Plymouth Avenue, from Main Street, west to the city limits
• U.S. 33 — from the city limits on Elkhart Road, southeast to Pike Street, south on Main Street, east on Madison Street, southeast on Lincolnway East to the city limits.
If potholes are in Elkhart County Roads (rural roads outside any city limits), they can be reported to Elkhart County Highway at 533-0538 or ofc@elkcohwy.org.
If potholes are city streets, they can be reported to the Goshen Street Department at 533-9711 or streets@goshencity.com.
