GOSHEN —
Elkhart County Commissioners Monday approved an additional appropriation from the general fund for $194,044 to go toward animal control services within the county.
According to Elkhart County Administrator Tom Byers, the appropriation is actually part of five agreements with local governments establishing animal control services for Elkhart, Goshen Middlebury, Bristol and Wakarusa.
Those five agreements in turn make up a larger, countywide agreement first approved several years ago establishing Elkhart County government as the intermediary between the Elkhart County Humane Society and the various communities included in the agreement.
“For a good number of years we’ve had an interlocal agreement with five of our local communities,” Byers said, “and basically what we do is they pay us and then we in turn make one payment on their behalf along with our contribution to the Humane Society.”
The city of Elkhart is currently set to pay $115,000 in animal control costs, while Goshen will pay $64,644, Middlebury will pay $5,400, Bristol will pay $4,000 and Wakarusa will pay $5,000.
“The way that works, they have until the end of March to get the interlocal agreement returned to us,” Byers said. “If they don’t return it to us, then we don’t make that payment until we’ve received that agreement.”
Courthouse Lighting
In other action, the board approved an additional appropriation of $17,500 to go toward lighting upgrades at the county courthouse.
“This is the money Greencroft donated to the county,” Byers said. “This was specifically earmarked to be put in the cum(ulative) cap(ital) fund to be used for the upgrading of the lighting at the courthouse.”
