UPDATE: Victims' names released in Monday buggy crash

SHIPSHEWANA — An 8-month-old child was killed early Monday afternoon and three others hurt in a collision between a buggy and semi-trailer north of Shipshewana.

Dead is Jayden LaWayne Schlabach, Shipshewana who suffered severe head injuries.

The crash occurred at 12:17 p.m. on Ind. 120 just west of C.R. 675 West, LaGrange County police reported. A 2001 Freightliner semi tractor and trailer driven by Jerry R. Hendricks of Bronson, Mich., was headed east passing a buggy traveling in the same direction on the shoulder of the roadway.

Police said the buggy turned into the path of the semi, resulting in the buggy colliding with the back portion of the trailer. The occupants of the buggy were ejected.

Also injured in the crash were Eva Schlabach, who was airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital; Darla Schlabach, 4, who was taken to Parkview LaGrange; and Nicole Schlabach, 3, who was also flown to a Fort Wayne hospital for treatment.

The crash remains under investigation.
