The retailers at the Old Bag Factory are trying something new — a monthly auction.
On the third Wednesday night of every month an auction will be held in the cavernous space adjacent to the Maple City Wholesale shop inside the Old Bag Factory.
The retail center is located at the intersection of Chicago and Indiana avenues and takes its name from its former use as a paper bag plant. The factory was converted years ago to a retail center that features a variety of shops and restaurants.
“The idea is to attract local people,” said Loren Beachy, who will run the auctions through his business, Beachy Auctions.
Merv Chupp, who operates Maple City Wholesale said the auction is a new venture for him. He is the contact person for people wanting to consign items to the auction.
“If somebody has a nice item they think they can consign, give me a call,” Chupp said.
Chupp too said the idea is to attract people from Elkhart County. He said he routinely has people from out of town stop in to shop, including six people from Japan who stopped in this week. But the Old Bag Factory retailers want to attract more local shoppers, according to Beachy and Chupp.
Beachy has been in the auction business for seven years.
“People will be encouraged to consign quality furniture they don’t need anymore or appliances, or antiques,” Beachy said.
There will be temporary seating available for those attending the auction, according to Beachy, and the auction itself will be lively and fun.
“It will be the liveliest auction most people will have attended. Our bid spotters jump around and have a ball,” Beachy said.
People who plan to attend the auctions can get a preview of the items for sale every Tuesday before the sales from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by visiting the Old Bag Factory.
Auctions have become entertainment in America as well as a business venture, with several cable TV shows centered around auctions.
“There are still a lot of people who enjoy coming to auctions and bidding and buying and enjoying the atmosphere,” Beachy said. “There are a lot of people like that and we try to make it fun.”
