GOSHEN —
One driver was killed and another hurt when a Ford SUV collided with a Chevrolet HHR at C.R.s 15 and 32 at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday.
Killed was Michael Failor, 60, Fort Wayne.
According to Elkhart County Sheriff’s Capt. Michael Culp, Failor was the driver of the Chevrolet headed south on C.R. 15 and apparently failed to yield the right of way to a westbound Ford Explorer. The Ford, driven by Joseph Martin, 34, South Bend, struck the Chevrolet in the driver’s door, causing fatal injuries to Failor.
Martin told investigators he was unable to stop and avoid the crash.
Martin was taken by Concord Township Fire Department medics to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of chest and knee pain.
James Begly, who lives west of the intersection, said he heard the crash impact while he was in his basement and then rode his scooter to the scene, about one-quarter mile from his home.
Ron Paul, a farmer in the area, said he was outside at his father’s home east of the scene, heard the crash and looked toward the intersection. He also went to the scene.
“I’m used to it,” Paul said of the noise of crashes. “There are so many accidents there. An unbelievable amount. There were two or three in one week one time and I called the county highway department about changing to a four-way stop. I was told that it would probably take a fatality for that change to be made.”
Bill Jessup, who lives northeast of the intersection, said he was working nearby on a backhoe at the time of the crash. He also went to the scene after he heard emergency vehicles.
“There are no skid marks,” Jessup pointed out while standing in a bean field near the crash.
Harrison Firefighter Cary Yaw also said there have been many accidents at this intersection.
“There are frequently accidents here,” Yaw said.
Culp said a sheriff’s crash investigation team and county coroner were called to the scene. The intersection was closed for several hours after the incident.
The intersection is a two-way stop for drivers on C.R. 15. Traffic on C.R. 32 does not have to stop at the intersection.
When drivers approach a two-way stop intersection, “you always have to plan on the possibility that the other driver won’t stop,” Culp said at the accident scene.
Goshen paramedics and Concord medics took ambulances to the scene to assist Harrison Township firefighters.
