Westview student wins pin design contest for Shipshewana Ice Festival

SHIPSHEWANA — The Shipshewana Ice Festival commemorative pins are being sold during the Shipshewana Retail Merchants’ open house. The open house will be in their offices above Wells Fargo Bank in Shipshewana. At the open house they’ll be selling the special pins, offering refreshments and decorating the merchant’s Christmas tree.

The Ice Festival Committee ordered a limited amount of the pins (300) so they will go fast. The pins can also be purchased at Jo-Jo’s Pretzels and The Country Cupboard, located in the Davis Mercantile building. The program offers shoppers, who pay $15 for a pin, a variety of discounts at participating Shipshewana merchants through the end of January 2013.

For the past three years the SRMA has offered the pin design contest to Westview High School art students. This year’s winner was Westview freshman, Cheyenne Charters. She was thrilled her design won the contest.

“I am very excited my drawing was chosen for this year’s Shipshewana Ice Festival,” Cheyenne said. “It will be an honor to ride in the Light Parade this Saturday.”

This year’s first runner-up was freshman, Stephani Hallgarth. Stephanie said her design was based upon the snow globes her sister collects.

Stephani said, “I’ve never really drawn something like this before but I thoroughly enjoyed it and I never expected the honor of being a first runner-up.”

Korean exchange student Yeonwoo Nam was second runner-up. Her design was inspired by a condiment.

“I saw a dressing bottle and I thought it would be a good design,” she said, explaining that she added snowmen, trees and snow.

SRMA Ice Festival organizer Levi King said, “Every year the designs are different and it is not easy to decide a winner. They are all good.”

We leave the design criteria wide open for the students. Let their imaginations be creative. It just has to fit on a 2-inch pin.”
