Man pleads guilty to robbery

GOSHEN — A Nappanee man pleaded guilty in Elkhart County Circuit Court to his involvement in a March robbery in Nappanee.

Larry D. Quinlan II, 37, 507 W. Walnut St., pleaded guilty to the Class B felony of robbery while armed with a deadly weapon Thursday morning. Quinlan admitted to the charge after attempting to steal money from Metzler Shoe Co., 111 S. Main St., March 30 by using a knife.

A Class B felony carries a term of between six and 20 years at the Indiana Department of Corrections, however a term of 15 years with a three year term of probation was agreed upon by the state of Indiana and Quinlan’s attorney.

Formal sentencing is scheduled for June 21.

Also in circuit court were two men arrested in the shooting death of a Goshen man back in March.

Daniel L. Heflin, 21, 415 Noble Court, Goshen, and William Terry, 25, 622 River Ave. Apt. A, Goshen, two of the four people arrested following the death of John E. Staub, 26, 502 E. Jefferson St., in the area of Indiana and Chicago Avenues on March 22, were both in court Thursday. Heflin is charged with murder, a Class A felony. Heflin’s trial date is set for June 4, where he will enter a “general denial,” according to his defense attorney Peter Todd. Further proceedings are scheduled for May 31.

Terry is charged with conspiracy to commit murder and criminal gang enhancement, however his trial was moved from June 4 to Aug. 6. A bond reduction hearing was held Thursday morning on his behalf, however was denied, leaving his current bond at $250,000.
