GOSHEN —
Late Friday afternoon, the on-air celebrities were on the sidewalk.
Froggy 102.7 personalities Doug Williams and Mekayla Diehl, joined by sales representative Taylor Williams, were greeting the public in Goshen during the downtown First Fridays celebration. In a sense, they were also marking the end of an era.
On Monday, Froggy is figuratively hopping away. The station is changing formats.
Doug Williams explained that music will be broadcast from 6 to 9 a.m. Monday. After 9 a.m., the station will change from Froggy 102.7 to 102.7 The Fan.
“It will be all-day, all evening sports,” Williams said as First Fridays attendees passed by at Main and Lincoln. Local sports will be featured in the morning and evening, and syndicated sports programming during the day.
The station will remain a Federated Media company. Williams also said that WAOR, Froggy’s classic rock sister station in Mishawaka, is also going to make the change at the same time.
Diehl described the changes as bittersweet.
“Media’s evolving,” she said. “We’re going to have to evolve, too. As (radio) personalities, we’re ready to make the change and we’re excited for it.”
“It’s change,” Doug Williams said. “It’s going to be difficult for people to get used to. But once they do they’re going to realize it’s a great sports network. It’s a great show.”
Williams also indicated some sadness on the part of the Froggy staff.
“We’ve got a history with the people of Goshen and Elkhart,” he said, and the staffers are also friends with one another.
“We’re a Froggy family,” Williams said. “We’ve become that.”
Taylor Williams said it was apparent from higher management that the change wasn’t the fault of the staff. Doug Williams indicated that economics was driving the transition.
“Sometimes you have to make changes to adapt to what people want,” he said.
