GOSHEN —
According to a report by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, suspects in the recent thefts of donation containers at local Walmart stores have been identified.
The release last Friday of the photo of the suspects’ vehicle in thefts of Children’s Miracle Network donation containers in the lobbies of Michiana Walmarts, including the Super Walmart in Goshen, has helped solve the cases, said Capt. James Bradberry.
Bradberry said the vehicle owner was identified by police and the people in a store video were also identified. Proposed charges will be sent to the Elkhart County prosecutor’s office for review. The names of the suspects will not be released prior to the case review by the prosecutor’s office, Bradberry said.
Police in South Bend arrested a man on suspicion of not only stealing cigarettes, but for swiping the donation container and the red wagon it sat on from the Walmart on Ireland Road about 7:30 a.m. Monday.
Police in St. Joseph County consider that man, a 31-year-old, a suspect in theft of donation containers at stores in Mishawaka and Elkhart County. Bradberry said he could not confirm if the St. Joseph County suspect is someone sought in the Elkhart County thefts.
Last week police began investigating a series of thefts of donation canisters from Walmart stores across Elkhart County. The canisters are four feet tall and contained donations made by shoppers.
Police said in each case a man entered the store while a get-away car was parked outside the front doors of the store. The thief would grab the canister and run outside, jumping into the car that sped away. That car was described as a two-door brown Chrysler, possibly a Sebring, with a Michigan registration.
