Interra opens branch at GHS

GOSHEN — With a goal of providing financial education to young people, Interra Credit Union opened its first in-school branch, the Redskin Branch, at Goshen High School on Aug. 22.   The ribbon cutting was held Wednesday, kicking off the grand opening celebration, ongoing through today.

Students, as well as faculty and staff, have the opportunity to open accounts, process transactions and learn more about financial services, according to credit union spokeswoman Karen Steffenson.

The in-school branch is open Wednesdays and Fridays during the school year in the commons area outside the cafeteria, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Nichole Schmidt a member services representative at Interra’s Middlebury office, serves as the coordinator at the branch, overseeing the operations.  Kearstin Beal, a senior at Goshen High School and participant in the cooperative education program, process transactions and assists in marketing and education efforts. She worked at Interra this summer in anticipation of her new role.

In addition to financial education, Interra is working with other Goshen High School departments and classes to provide other experiences for students, according to Steffenson. The building trades class constructed the kiosk which houses the Redskin Branch in the commons area. The sign shop made the branch and kiosk signs. GTV is producing commercials for Interra’s “Finance Fridays” financial education segments, and Interra staff members are working with the school newspaper and The Tomahawk.  Marketing and personal finance classes will also work on campaigns and projects throughout the year.
