GOSHEN —
While the national unemployment rate reached a five-year low in January at 7.7 percent, Elkhart County saw unemployment move back into double digits.
According to statistics released Monday by Indiana Workforce Development, Elkhart County saw the number of people unemployed rise to 9,418 in January. That’s up from 8,615 in December. That pushed the county’s unemployment rate from 9.5 to 10.3 percent.
As for Goshen, the city saw unemployment rise from 9 to 9.6 percent as the number of unemployed rose from 1,269 to 1,364.
Elkhart also saw a .6 percent spike in January as unemployment rose from 11.9 in December to 12.5 in January.
Both Goshen and Elkhart, along with the county, had less unemployment in the first month of 2013 as compared to January 2012.
Goshen’s unemployment was at 10.8 percent in January 2012 while Elkhart’s was 13.2
The county unemployment rate in January 2012 was 11.2 percent.
Elkhart County continues to have higher unemployment rates than surrounding counties.
Kosciusko County’s January unemployment rate was 8.4 percent while LaGrange County registered an unemployment rate of 8.8 percent in January.
Each county saw a spike in unemployment from December to January.
Kosciusko’s rate rose from 7.5 percent in December while LaGrange’s was at 8.1 in December.
In January 2012, Kosciusko County was at 8.5 percent while LaGrange was at 9.3 percent.
Noble County’s unemployment rate was 10.4 percent for January. That was up from 9.6 in December and equals the unemployment rate of January 2012.
