Family-owned Gerace’s opens in Waterford Mills

GOSHEN —

People missing their south side pizza fix are in luck — a new family-owned Italian restaurant has opened in the former Bruno’s building on Ind. 15 in Waterford Mills.

Gerace’s Pizzeria is named after the town where owner Antonio Panetta grew up in the Calabria province of Italy. Antonio came to the United States in 1984 "and started making pizzas," he said.

He was part owner of Davinci’s in Elkhart from 1990 to 1995, before selling his share and starting a landscaping business.

When he learned the Bruno’s franchise (a cousin of his) in Goshen was closing, he, his wife, Angelina, and their three daughters, Maria, Daniela and Francesca, decided to start a family restaurant.

The restaurant offers delivery and carry-out, but also has a dining room for customers who choose to eat there.

Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays from 11 a.m. .to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 4 to 9 p.m.

Gerace’s serves pizza, of course, with all the traditional toppings, but also offers pineapple, broccoli, fresh tomatoes, jalapeños, pepperonchini, banana peppers, garlic and artichoke. Diners can choose regular, thick or thin in the homemade crusts. The sauces are also made fresh, as is the bread. Pizzas come in seven sizes, 9, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 24 inches.

Pasta dishes (lunch and dinner sizes) include the traditional spaghetti and meatballs, fettuccine alfredo and lasagna, but also a Tony’s Special Lasagna, made with layers of pasta and meat sauce filled with peas, hardboiled eggs, mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

"That’s the way my dad likes his lasagna so he decided to make it here," eldest daughter, Maria, said.

There is also a Pasta a Forno, which is baked mostacoili, with eggs, ham, pepperoni, mozzarella cheese and sauce.

A variety of salads and subs are offered, including sausage, meatball, Italian beef, chicken bacon ranch, a panetta (breaded chicken cutlet) and more.

Sides include regular breadsticks, stuffed breadsticks, garlic toast and garlic toast with cheese.

The restaurant offers catering services and will also make up pans of lasagna or other pastas for larger parties.
