ELKHART —
After a year of being unemployed, Will Grove decided it was time to create his own opportunity. Now Will and his wife Lisa are owners of Ink Hound, a tattoo apparel store in Concord Mall.
“I took the future in my own hands, cashed in my 401(K), and decided to go for it,” Will said while standing behind the store’s counter Friday.
Will had worked at AM General in Mishawaka for seven years before he received a lay-off notice.
Will and Lisa live in Osceola and are into the tattoo lifestyle. Each had several tatts and piercings visible as they worked at the store.
Lisa said there are 15 to 20 tattoo shops operating in Michiana so there are thousands of potential customers in the area. “We know that people would enjoy our shop,” she said.
She added that now is also a good time to open a business. “We are hoping to get in on the upswing of the economy.”
The Groves believe their shop is unique to Michiana, and anything similar would be located in a very large city.
The store, which is located between Louie’s Tux Shop and Jo-Ann Fabrics, opened July 20 and the initial response exceeded the couple’s expectations. The couple sells several T-shirts and tank tops from Steadfast Brand, InkAddict, and 2Kool2BTrue that are designed by tattoo artists. There are also hats, jewelry, belt buckles, framed art and tattoo aftercare products for sale.
All products are American-made, even the T-shirt hanging on a rack that sports the logo “I want a tattooed president.”
A grand opening celebration for Ink Hound Apparel is being planned for the end of August. The store is open during the mall’s normal business hours, which are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. The store’s phone number is 574-875-0035. The store also has a presence on Facebook and Twitter.
