MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (AP) — State regulators have warned Northern Indiana Public Service Co. that it must improve its customer service even as they approved a projected 10 percent increase in electricity rates for residential customers.
The order from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission gives NIPSCO a rate increase lower than the 15.6 percent it had sought. The commission said it had seen "positive efforts" by the company to improve service, but that it would keep monitoring that work.
NIPSCO chief executive Jimmy Staton says the Merrillville-based company knows work remains in improving its responsiveness and service reliability.
Citizens Action Coalition organizer Kerwin Olson said the group was concerned that rates for commercial and industrial customers would increase less than for homes.
NIPSCO has 457,000 electricity customers across the northern third of Indiana.
